Payment Service Providers

Using a Payment Gateway from a Payment Service Provider (PSP)

An Internet Merchant Account (IMA) allows you to accept debit/credit card payments directly to your business bank account, online. Due to the stringent criteria required for an IMA, many smaller businesses opt for a payment processing company instead.

Using a Payment Gateway, provided by a Payment Service Provider (PSP) offers an alternative for businesses whose card-based-turnover is too low or who fail to meet the criteria for an IMA.

Advantages of a payment gateway or payment service provider:

  • You needn't worry about the hassle or expense of an IMA.
  • They provide a secure payment system, reducing development costs.
  • The approval process is much less stringent than for an IMA.
  • It's much faster to get up and running when compared to an IMA.

Disadvantages of a payment gateway or payment service provider:

  • Customers have to temporarily leave your website to make the transaction.
  • You may have to wait for 30-60 days before receiving payments to your account.
  • On-going per-transaction fees are typically higher than with an IMA.
  • You often need to take-out insurance against fraud/chargebacks, or wear the cost.
