Migrate your site to the latest Umbraco to improve performance.
Are you using another CMS platform that is not meeting your business requirements? Are you already on Umbraco but it's not performing as well as it could or, has it reached its End-Of-Life and you need to upgrade?
16i has extensive experience in managing complex Umbraco migrations and upgrades of all shapes and sizes. We have developed a methodology to make this process as streamlined and seamless as possible to ensure you get an Umbraco setup you can rely on.
I'm already on Umbraco, why do I need a migration?
There are many reasons a migration is required but most likely your Umbraco has reached or is approaching its End-of-Life and means your platform is beyond the point where it can be updated and is no longer supported.
It’s not just about missing features; it’s increased risk from security threats, performance issues, growing costs to maintain and zero support when things break. Your customers expect a level of stability, which outdated platforms can’t deliver.
We can help you identify which version you are on (if you aren't already aware) and help put the right plan in place to migrate you to the latest version.
Version | Release date | Release Type | Support phase | Security phase | End-of-Life |

Umbraco 10 | June 16, 2022 | LTS | December 1, 2022 | June 16, 2024 | June 16, 2025 |
Umbraco 12 | June 29, 2023 | STS | December 14, 2023 | March 29, 2024 | June 29, 2024 |

Umbraco 15 | November 14, 2024 | STS | May 14, 2025 | August 14, 2025 | November 14, 2025 |

Umbraco 17 | November 27, 2025 | LTS | November 27, 2027 | November 27, 2027 | November 27, 2028 |
If you are on Umbraco 16, support has already ended. If you are on Umbraco 13, support ends in December 2026. In both cases, Umbraco 17 is the recommended upgrade path: it is the current long-term support release, built on .NET 10, and supported until November 2028.
WordPress to Umbraco migration
The most common migration we handle. Organisations move from WordPress to Umbraco for a consistent set of reasons: plugin sprawl becoming unmanageable, security overhead from a large plugin surface, or a requirement for a bespoke integration that WordPress cannot deliver cleanly.
The migration involves rebuilding the site's content structure as Umbraco document types, migrating content and media, mapping every existing URL to its new equivalent with 301 redirects, and rebuilding any plugin-delivered functionality natively. The result is a leaner site with fewer moving parts and no recurring plugin licence fees.
If you are still weighing the decision, our guide to the differences between Umbraco and WordPress covers where each platform fits.
Drupal, Sitecore, Kentico and other CMS migrations
We also migrate sites to Umbraco from Drupal, Sitecore, Optimizely, Kentico, Joomla, and other platforms. The reasons vary. Organisations leaving Sitecore or Kentico are usually paying enterprise licence fees for capability they do not fully use. Organisations leaving Drupal often want a friendlier editing experience for their content team.
Whatever the source platform, the process is the same in principle: audit the existing content model, rebuild it properly in Umbraco, migrate content and media, preserve URLs and SEO equity through redirect mapping, and rebuild integrations natively rather than through workarounds.
Upgrading between Umbraco versions
If you are already on Umbraco, an upgrade is a different exercise from a platform migration.
Upgrading between recent versions, for example Umbraco 13 to Umbraco 17, is a relatively contained project. Umbraco supports direct LTS-to-LTS upgrades, so there is no need to step through each intermediate version. The work involves updating the .NET target framework, updating packages to compatible versions, resolving any breaking changes affecting custom code, and testing thoroughly before deployment.
Upgrading from Umbraco 7 or 8 is a different matter. Those versions were built on the legacy .NET Framework rather than .NET Core, and the architectural gap is too large for a conventional upgrade. In practice this is a rebuild on the modern platform, which is a larger project but also an opportunity to clear years of accumulated technical debt.
Our detailed guide covers what the Umbraco 17 upgrade involves in full.
How long does an Umbraco migration take?
Timelines depend on the size of the site, the source platform, and how much custom functionality needs rebuilding. As a guide:
Project | Typical timeline |
|---|---|
Umbraco version upgrade (13 to 17, standard packages) | 2 to 4 weeks |
Umbraco version upgrade with custom extensions or integrations | 4 to 8 weeks |
WordPress or Drupal to Umbraco migration, standard site | 6 to 12 weeks |
Umbraco 7 or 8 rebuild on the modern platform | 8 to 16 weeks |
Large multi-site or enterprise platform | Scoped individually after audit |
Every project begins with an audit, so the figure we give you is based on your actual site rather than a guess.
Will a migration affect my SEO?
It can, and this is the single most common concern clients raise. A migration done badly loses rankings. A migration done properly does not.
The critical work is redirect mapping: every existing URL must point to its equivalent on the new site, so that accumulated authority transfers rather than being lost. Alongside that, metadata needs preserving, structured data needs reinstating, and the new site needs crawling and checking before and after launch.
We follow a structured process for this on every migration. Our SEO migration checklist sets out the full before, during, and post-launch sequence we work through.
